General Travel Information

Passport & Visa Requirements
A passport and visa are required for most international guests traveling to Brazil for any purpose. Brazilian visas should be obtained in advance from the Brazilian Embassy or consulate nearest to the traveler's place of residence. There are no "airport visas" and immigration authorities will refuse entry to Brazil to anyone not possessing a valid visa. All Brazilian visas, regardless of the length of validity, must initially be used within 90 days of the issuance date or will no longer be valid. Immigration authorities will not allow entry into Brazil without a valid visa.

Additionally, travelers who have recently visited certain countries, including most other Latin American countries, may be required to present an inoculation card indicating they had a yellow fever inoculation or they may not be allowed to board the plane or enter the country.

Visiting São Paulo
São Paulo is the most important Brazilian business centre, and the largest city in both Brazil and the Southern Hemisphere, with its metropolitan area ranked among the largest in the world.  It is a city of immigrants and of colorful ethnic neighborhoods, and is often compared to such cities as New York and London, with Italian, Japanese, Chinese, Arabic and Portuguese influences.

Everything is available in this megacity, known for its great shopping, vivid nightlife, outstanding gastronomy, music and fashion scenes.  São Paulo is home to hundreds of museums, theatres, cinemas, parks, performance halls, event spaces, world-class art galleries, street fairs, shopping centres and specialized retail districts.  And there are excellent beaches within just 40 miles.

Below are some links to help you with your trip to São Paulo.

Attractions in São Paulo

Safety & Security
Street crime remains a problem for visitors and local residents alike, especially in the evenings and late at night. Travelers are advised to keep a copy of their passport on them when in public and, where possible, to keep their passport in a hotel safe or other secure place. At airports, hotel lobbies, bus stations and other public places, incidents of pick pocketing, theft of hand carried luggage, and laptop computers are common.

São Paulo has a high rate of armed robbery of pedestrians and vehicle drivers at stoplights. There is a particularly high incidence of robberies and pickpocketing in the Praca da Se section of São Paulo and in the eastern part of the city. As is true of "red light districts" in other cities, the areas of São Paulo on Rua Augusta north of Avenida Paulista and the Estacao de Luz metro area are especially dangerous. There are regular reports of young women slipping knockout drops in men's drinks and robbing them of all their belongings while they are unconscious. Armed holdups of pedestrians and motorists by young men on motorcycles (“motoboys”) are an increasingly common occurrence in São Paulo. Victims who resist run the risk of violent attack. Laptop computers are a robber’s first choice in São Paulo. While, these occurrences have not resulted in any injuries to U.S. citizens, be aware of your surroundings and exercise caution. We advise U.S. citizens to avoid São Paulo’s favelas, as neither the tour company nor the city police can guarantee their safety when entering favelas.
