BioPartnering FutureEUROPE (BPFE) represents the evolution of Europe’s longest running biopharma partnering event. BioPartnering Europe was held annually in London from 1993-2011. Together with major European stakeholders, BPE has been expanded to include partnering, finance, networking, and policy to meet the needs of a growing life science industry in Europe. The brand name BPE was modified slightly to include the word “Future” because the life sciences are a major component of the European Commission’s 2020 vision of a globally competitive knowledge-based economy in Europe. Title: Supporting Small Businesses and Innovation in the European Union

Horizon 2020, the next EU Framework Programme for the period 2014-2020, will include a stronger focus on a market-driven approach and will support innovation in Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) through collaboration and a new funding instrument dedicated to SMEs.

During this session, two Coordinators for EU grants will present how their projects aim at boosting the exploitation of research results in the area of Health by strengthening technology transfer and IPR management in Europe. You will then learn through case studies how two SMEs joined EU funded health projects and how these collaborations benefited their organization.

EU Grant Programs:
The ENTENTE project aims at strengthening knowledge transfer offices in universities, public research organisations, hospitals and promoting transnational collaboration between industry and academia in the health sector, through networking activities among all the key stakeholders within knowledge transfer in the health sector in Europe.

The Health-2-Market project aims to equip Health researchers with the knowledge and skills portfolio required to deploy a better and more viable IPR / asset management strategy and exploit their research results, either through the setting up of new business ventures (e.g. in the form of start-ups, spin-offs, spin-outs, etc.) or in a broader sense through their more active involvement in interdisciplinary cooperation actions.

During the last few years we have seen an increased focus on the development of regional master plans aimed at boosting innovation by fostering public-private partnerships between companies, universities and research institutions. This is the case in Europe with the emergence of competitiveness clusters such as BioWin in Wallonia (Belgium), as it is also in the US with, for example, the Massachusetts Life Sciences “Super Cluster”. More recently, the State of Massachusetts launched the NIMAC-project to bridge US and EU innovation players in health domains. The European Commission is now committed to developing an extended NIMAC-program around E-health to bring more transatlantic collaborative partnerships out of it. BioWin is also willing to walk that bridge. One of its members, Promethera BioSciences will showcase the region’s expertise in regenerative medicine which is another path for EU-US partnerships.
